In the past few years bees and beekeepers have been doing it tough, with bushfires (which destroyed 1000s of hives and millions of hectares of potential foraging bushland), as well as climate change, drought and habitat destruction. Add to that, the trend of knockdown rebuilds, where a house had a fairly large established garden often full of flowering plants/trees which provides food (nectar) for the bees is replaced with multiple units, with a long hard capped driveway and a minimal garden, if any which is full of strappy leaved plants. No flowers = no nectar which is bee food. And to top it off, Varroa Destructor mite is now in Australia.
